Some changes have been introduced in the April breeding value estimation. Below is a summary of the changes in the Netherlands and below that, other countries.

Udder health
Clinical mastitis data have been added to the breeding value udder health. Starting 2008, breeding values for clinical and subclinical mastitis have been estimated. This makes use of somatic cell count patterns based on somatic cell count measurements from Milk Production  Registration. These breeding values make up the udder health index, which is part of the national index NVI.

Introduction Dry Matter Intake
Over the last years, Wageningen Livestock Research has been researching dry matter intake and feed efficiency. During this project, a method for estimating breeding values for dry matter intake has been developed. Data of experiments from the ’90 as well as more recent experiments have been used. The breeding values are based on measurements on cows. Besides that, correlations between dry matter intake and production traits as well as body weight are used to estimate the breeding values. The breeding value dry matter intake is expressed in kg dry matter per day.

Adjustment conformation
The breeding value estimation for conformation has seen a change in the model. Two extra factors have been taken into account, namely age of the mother at birth of the classified daughter and age of the sire per bull category.
Also, the calculation of the frame composite had been slightly changed. The breeding value for rump angle is now cut of above 108. So a breeding value rump angle above 108 no longer adds points to the frame breeding value.
